Chemours® Teflon® Coating Types

There are many different Chemours® Teflon® coating types. Each one has its own unique properties that help determine which coating is best for your product. The most important thing to keep in mind when selecting the ideal coating for your product is the cure temperature. The product needs to be able to withstand baking at the cure temperature in order to qualify for the chosen coating. For instance, tin and lead have melting points below 700°F and therefore aren’t acceptable for PTFE coatings. Please take a look below to see which coating is ideal for your needs.

Materials that can withstand the required cure temperature may have Teflon® coatings applied to them
Typical Fluoropolymer Topcoat Cure Temperature
PTFE 750°F (398°C)
FEP 650°F (340°C)
PFA 700°F (370°C)
Teflon® S 350-650°F (175-340°C)
Specialty Systems 800°F (427°C)

Teflon® PTFE coatings are the most temperature resistant out of all the Teflon® coating solvents 260°C (500°F) on a constant . They also provide the least amount of friction when compared to other options. In addition, PTFE is tremendously nonwetting and acts as an excellent electrical insulator. PTFE is also unfazed by the majority of chemicals. However, it is porous to water vapor and other gases, and therefore can be absorptive. Items that qualify to be coated with PTFE must be able to withstand a minimum cure temperature of 370°C (700°F).

Teflon® FEP coatings are fluorinated structures that have first-rate release and are commonly used for mold release coatings. They form a non-porous film because of melt-flow characteristics and are more resistant to chemicals than coatings made from PTFE. And while FEP has less threshold for heat resistance than PTFE, it cures at lower temperatures. FEP is extraordinarily nonwetting, with an extremely low coefficient of friction.

Teflon® PFA is a fluoropolymer coating that couples the ability to be non-porous and chemical-resistant with the ability to be resistant to high temperatures. Layers can be built to 40 mil (1000 microns) and are considerably tough and resistant to abrasions. Coefficient of friction and release are also great.

Teflon® S products need only one coat and are self-priming. Formulated with organic adhesive to enhance binding, they do not need primers. They generally cure at lower temperatures than pure fluoropolymers. The resin covers the surface during curing. However, because of the adhesion of resins, some features of pure fluoropolymers, including release and resistance to temperature, might be compromised.

Specialty Systems have been created by Chemours® as a line of products that incorporate a patented blend of PTFE, PFA, and FEP. This line was created in order to provide endurance and resistance to abrasions, along with superior release. Specialty Systems come in three different coating options and conform to FDA regulations in 21.CFR regarding coatings and direct food contact.

Xylan® XLR This fluoropolymer coating made by Whitford has excellent release. It has been found to provide molders with an excellent and long lasting option in regards to release, and sometimes lasting up to 50 times longer than other coats that have been tested. It is also extremely hard and resistant to permeation.

If you need an item coated with a product not mentioned above, please contact us anyway, as we have done specialty orders in the past and can do so again.
